Not being the creative type these days I rely on others (Eric Meyer, for example) to provide me with fodder for my blog.
So the idea is you put Unfortunately and your name in Google ("unfortunately patricia", important that you use the quotation marks) and just copy the text snippets that come up. The results that come up will be skewed once I out up this list (it took 3 days for Eric Meyer).
So, here is my results for Unfortunately Patricia:

If it's February it must be time for Gilbert & Sullivan. Been a springtime ritual for me ever since I moved to Montreal. Since the spring of 1979 I have played between one and four G&Ss every spring. The longest association is with the Lakeshore Lght Opera. I have played with them since 1979 only missing about 4 in that time (for two years I was living in Germany so it would have been a bit difficult to get back for it although there was a spring when I was working in Bordon, Ontario and still managed to do the show by only subbing out two services and taking two vacation days!). The characature on the home page was presented to me last year by the LLO during their 50th anniversary celebarations.
I guess it's because of the British background of most of the english speaking population of Montreal that the G&Ss are so popular. When I still lived in California I played Broadway musicals all the time. In all of my years in Montreal I have yet to play one, just G&Ss.
As the english population in Montreal has shifted there has been a shift in the both the number of G&S companies and their audience. There is only three groups left doing G&S: the McGill Savoy Society who try their best to do the most untraditional job (and thereby sometimes hilarious adaptations) of the operettas and the two traditional troups: the Lakeshore Light Opera and the Montreal West Operatic Society.
Of the two traditional ones it seems that Lakeshore Light Opera is the one with the firm footing. The MWOS seems to have imploded the last couple of years and that coupled with a dubious settlement with the Musicians Guild (won't go over that matter at the moment) over the use of the orchestra seems to have crippled it.
Meanwhile, LLO has so far managed to deflect the union problems and the artistic problems that beset MWOS to keep trucking along.
So, for the next couple of Sundays I have the LLO orchestra rehearsals then we have the shows. 10 services in all, 4 rehearsals and 6 shows. Most in the orchestra has done this for years so we can do the show in our sleep.
The cast itself has been rehearsing since the fall but are usually well trained so we get the job done with just two rehearsals on stage.
It just wouldn't be spring with a G&S.
So I had this credit for around $625cdn with Continental Airlines from last June when I went to California. I have until June to use it up and I started think about what I could with it. Fly over to England to visit friends? Take a trip down South and soak up some Caribean sun? Nooooo, I decide to go to an absolute geekfest, the SXSW Interactive festival in Austin, Texas March 10-14.
Everything is all set. I reserved the hotel during Christmas, lucky I did as they are almost sold out now. I will be staying at La Quinta Capitol, 9 blocks away from the Austin Convention Center. I only reserved a king, I should have reserved a double double and then tried to find someone to share it. It wouldn't have cost me any more than the king. Maybe I can find someone who would be willing to sleep on a roll away. Not like I'm going to be sleeping much while there anyway ;-)
I am checking out on the morning of the 15th and have rented a car for two days to take a mini vacation. I have to fly back on the Friday because I have a class on Friday evening and will have to miss the class on the Friday before (10 March) because I fly out during the day. I am already missing parts of two other classes because of gigs hence the decision to high tail it back. Contrary to popular belief I am not rushing back because it's St Patrick's Day but I will most certainly be at my regular spot for the parade on Sunday.
But I diverse. The SXSW should be loads of fun, I just hope I the stamina for it.
