Democratic Right

Yesterday I received my Overseas Ballot package for this years Presidential race. It came in two bundles. One was the ballot with a return envelope and an Official Sample Ballot, the other was two thick books (ok, one thick book and one not so thick supplement) on the California State Propositions.

Not a whole lot in the way of explanations. Only took 4 emails to my sister in Ottawa to figure out how to fill everything out (she did hers last week). Turns out that we don't get to vote on the Propositions (which includes such things as funding for stem cell research and changes to the "Three Strikes" Law), just in the Presidential, Senatorial and Representative races.

This is the first time I have ever voted in an American election. I seem to think that 18 year olds had been given the right to vote before I left California at 21 but I think at 18 to 21 I was in-between Presidential races.

I don't know exactly why I feel so compelled to vote in this race. I live here now and so for the most part am unaffected by the politcal scene in the US. But that statement alone is a bit wrong because unfortunately American Policy is felt around the world. I do have strong feelings concerning Bush (negative feelings), I don't think he is good for the world as a whole. I am not necessarily a strong supporter of the Democratic party but feel it is the lessor of two evils.

Don't think my vote will really matter. It's for the California ticket. California is not considered very important in this race, I think it (and it's Electoral votes) are firmly in Kerrys hands. I don't think either candidate has stepped a foot in California in ages preferring to campaign in the swing states.

But at least I have excised my democratic right.
